Is it true that ‘Benjarong’ porcelains are created to be showcased than being used in everyday life? In the past, it might be so, but today, the royal porcelains are reinvented to be more useable in the contemporary world, and the prototypes were exhibited in the “BENJARONG: SACICT SIGNATURE COLLECTION” exhibition last year at Siam Discovery.
As a pioneering project in revamping traditional crafts, the “BENJARONG: SACICT SIGNATURE COLLECTION” exhibition combined long-standing craftsmanship with new designs created by a new generation of designers. The results were the Modern Traditional Benjarong works that still have the old charms, but also be more contemporary and functional.
The concept of the “Signature Collection” aiming to develop the new identity of Thai Benjarong porcelains corresponds with “Today’s Life Crafts” concept of the Support Arts and Crafts International Centre of Thailand (SACICT) which aims to strengthen the character of each community, so that the locals can use this character to develop their products. This project aims to illustrate that local intelligence is better be developed with a sense of community. But how it will turn out? Only time will tell.
